The Bavarian Forest National Park at your doorstep
Hotel Eibl-Brunner is situated in Frauenau, right at the entrance to Germany’s oldest national park. Established in 1970, covering around 25,000 hectares, and, together with the Šumava National Park in the Czech Republic, the largest contiguous forest reserve in Central Europe. Over a third of the area is under strict nature conservation. Here, nature is still allowed to be nature: dead wood becomes a source of new life, streams carve their way through the landscape, and humans are silent observers.

Animal enclosure
On a circular trail of around 7km through mountain forests, you’ll encounter lynx, wolves, otters, wildcats, eagle owls, and brown bears – in spacious enclosures designed for observing the animals in the wild. Admission is free. The encounter: priceless.
Barrier-free paths make the site accessible to everyone all year round.
Our tip: combine your visit with the tree-top walk and the Hans Eisenmann House at the Lusen National Park Centre, and your day is sure to be a memorable one.
Hiking right from the
hotel door
Put on your shoes and set off – the trails start right outside our front door. As mentioned, our hotel is situated right on the edge of the Bavarian Forest National Park. Numerous trails lead you through quiet valleys, species-rich mixed mountain forests, and up to the striking peaks of Mt Rachel, Mt Lusen, and Mt Falkenstein. And along wooden walkways, you can explore natural areas where the forest reveals its true potential – wilder and more diverse than ever before. The natural beauty here speaks for itself.
The summit of Mt Lusen (1,373m) is covered in granite boulders which, according to legend, were piled up by the devil to hide a treasure of gold. We don’t know if that’s true. We know for a fact, however, that the view from the Himmelsleiter path is spectacular.
Mt Grosser Rachel (1,453m) is the second-highest mountain in the Bavarian Forest. Below the summit lies Lake Rachel, a small glacial lake, above which the Rachel Chapel stands. Quiet, a bit out of the way, but beautiful.
Mt Grosser Falkenstein (1,315m) in the western part of the national park is the perfect peak for anyone who fancies a bite to eat afterwards: the mountain hut just below is rustic, cosy, and very Bavarian.
